ROCK THE TABLA-HOSSAM RAMZY & Special Guests DOWNLOAD

It is being touted as percussionist Hossam Ramzy’s realization of a 10-year old dream. And the man seems determined to make it worth the long duration, collaborating with some of the biggest names for Rock The Tabla –Billy Cobham, a man he considers his idol; A R Rahman, with whom he had worked in Meenaxi,Manu Katche and Omar Faruk Takbilek to name a few. Looking at the track list and the preview, the album seems to be set on a Middle Eastern theme. Quite fitting too, considering that the artist has spent a lifetime fusing Arabic music with various other genres.

1. Hossam Ramzy & Special Guests - Arabantana [5:7]
2. Hossam Ramzy & Special Guests - Cairo to India [5:50]
3. Hossam Ramzy & Special Guests - Six Teens: 6 Teens [4:30]
4. Hossam Ramzy & Special Guests - Ancient Love Affair [5:29]
5. Hossam Ramzy & Special Guests - Shukran Arigato [3:52]
6. Hossam Ramzy & Special Guests - Bluesy Flusey [5:4]
7. Hossam Ramzy & Special Guests - Billy Dancing [4:32]
8. Hossam Ramzy & Special Guests - Sawagy [4:4]
9. Hossam Ramzy & Special Guests - Dom and Doumbia [3:2]
10. Hossam Ramzy & Special Guests - Rock the Tabla [5:33]
11. Hossam

Don 2 Music Review-BollySpice

Compared with the hype surrounding Shahrukh Khan’s Ra.One, his second and last release for the 2011, Don 2: The Chase Continues (Don 2) makes its entry with a whisper rather than bang. While Don: The Chase Begins Again (Don 1) had immense pressure on the makers to aesthetically re-create the yesteryear favourite, the sequel has not been subject to such expectations. Don 2 is an entirely new and different concept, opening the makers to a goldmine of creative opportunities. Arguably, this applies to the music directors, Shankar-Eshaan-Loy (SEL), more so than the reminder of the film’s cast and crew.
Don 2 sees SEL reprise their role as music directors while Javed Akhtar reprises his as lyricist. No surprises there as all Excel Entertainment ventures have featured the lyrical and musical combination of SEL and Javed Akhtar exclusively since their advent in 1999. The album comprises of 11 tracks and features the vocal talents of Vishal Dadlani (I Hate Luv Storys – Title Track), Shankar Mahadevan (Desi Girl – Dostana), KK (Mere Brother Ki Dulhan – Title Track), Anusha Mani (Lazy Lamhe – Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic), Caralisa Monteiro  (Phir Dekhiye – Rock On!) and the legendry Usha Uthup (Darling –  7 Khoon Maaf).
Don 2 hits cinemas Christmas 2011.
Shahrukh Khan gets into the skin of Don with Aa Raha Hoon Palat Ke and sets the tone of the soundtrack, confirming that the King really is back!
Vishal Dadlani and Anusha Mani render the recently unveiled Zara Dil Ko Thaam Lo, a trendy yet retro number with an appetite for the sinister. While Anusha gets the track off to the good start, the song clearly belongs to Vishal Dadlani who embodies Don’s irresistible evil charm to perfection. The lyrics are definitely not award-worthy but music and vocals more than make up for it.
Hai Yeh Maya is delivered amazingly well by Usha Uthup, naturally. However, it suffers from one flaw, an atrocious chorus line. The trumpets take away from the slick-philosophical-action-thriller number (like the 007 title songs) and sounds very amateurish. The rest of the track is fine but since the cringe-worthy chorus line obviously repeats at regular intervals the whole track more or less falters. That is why the remix of the track by Shane Mendonsa is a godsend. Uthup’s vocals get the strong pulsating musical background they deserve.
Dushman Mera begins with what sounds like bongo drums, an immediate deal breaker. The rest of the track unfortunately does not make up for this travesty as more mediocrity follows, the most appalling of which is the vocalisation of the second interlude of Don 1’s title track. Further, the tacky lyrics make the song more unbearable. Sunitha and Shankar’s vocals are wasted. In a nutshell, Skip!
SEL get their groove back with thematic piece, The King Is Back. It commences with Sunitha Sarathay melodiously asking ‘look who is back?’ which is followed by some pulsating techno/rock that leads up to Don theme. Also included is a nice interlude with violins and piano on the tunes introduced in Zara Dil Ko Tham Lo. All that mixed with Shahrukh’s echoes of “Don” and the track is an instant winner!
Mujhko Pehchaan Lo, the renewed version of Don 1’s title track is perfectly alright if you can effectively gets Shaan tongue-in-cheek rendition of the prior track out of your mind. K.K does an impressive job but he lacks the way Shaan embodied the irresistible bad-romance feel of the original number. KK does a great job rendering the following line:
duniya mujhe jo bhi kahe, iski mujhe parwah kya; mukhko to hai yeh dekhna, jeetne ki hai rah kya
And why not since this is the only bit that is not a rehash of the original. Arguably, KK’s rendition is more work and less play and the same can be said of the music. While the original had an intoxicating elegance about it, Mujhko Pehchaan Lo is more sleek and purposeful. The remix of Mujhko Pehchaan Lo is a mess at best that muffles KK’s vocals and has the dialogue, ‘Don to pakadna mushqil hi nahin, namumkin hai” in an infinite insufferable loop. Two words, epic fail.
The album ends with the The Don Waltz, a beautiful classical thematic piece at odds with its predecessors.  SEL’s clever insertion of the Don’s theme, particularly the one vocalised by Sunitha Sarathy has to be commended.
In summary, even in the absence of pressures of living up to the 1978 original, SEL did not manage to create an impressive album with Don 2. Their work in box-office disaster The Game that featured similar themes with Don 2 was more commendable than this. In addition to Shaan, Midival Punditz (Don Revisited) and DJ Rudolph (Main Hoon Don – Funcinternational Mix) were sorely missed. Also, we have seen Javed Akhtar pen out better lyrics than the likes of this album. Here’s hoping his regains his eloquent talent soon.
In any event Zara Dil Ko Tham Lo, The King is Back and Yeh Hai Maya (Remix) are the pick of the pack. Maybe Mujhko Pehchaan Lo if Don fans manage get over Shaan’s Main Hoon Don. The Don Waltz may be effective as part of the film’s narration but does not do any favours to the OST while Dushman Mera is a total write off.

Instruments of the world-RAVANHATTA

The ravanahatha (ravanhattarawanhattharavanastron or ravana hasta veena) is a bowed fiddle popular in Western India. It is believed to have originated among the Hela civilisation of Sri Lanka in the time of King Ravana. The bowl is made of cut coconut shell, the mouth of which is covered with goat hide. A dandi, made of bamboo, is attached to this shell. The principal strings are two: one of steel and the other of a set of horsehair. The long bow has jingle bells.
Throughout the medieval history of India, kings were patrons of music; this helped in increased popularity of ravanhatta among royal families. In Rajasthan and Gujarat, it was the first musical instrument to be learned by princes. The Sangit tradition of Rajasthan further helped in popularizing ravanhatta among ladies as well.
According to legend, Ravana was an ardent devotee of the Hindu god Shiva, and served him using the soulful music emanating from the ravanahatha. In the Hindu Ramayana epic, after the war between Rama and Ravana, Hanuman picked up a ravanahatha and returned to North India. In India, the ravanahatha is still played in Rajasthan. From India, the ravanahatha travelled westwards to the Middle East and Europe, where in the 9th century, it came to be called the ravanastrom

INTRODUCING EUPHORIA

Palash Sen, front-man and doctor, stuck to his dreams of performing in front of crowds and entertaining people. He is known to empty the tank night after night. Bass player extraordinaire, Debajyoti Bhaduri, joined hands with Palash in the early nineties and adopted Euphoria as his own dream. The duo has been playing together ever since.

Moving through several line ups, the band kept searching for their elusive break. It came 10 years after their inception in 1988. Euphoria released their first studio album titled ‘Dhoom’ in the October of 1998 to critical acclaim and commercial success. They became the pioneers of ‘Hind Rock’ or rock music in Hindi. Their first single was titled ‘Dhoom Pichuk’ – and it became the most popular video to hit TV screens in that decade. Directed by ad-guru Pradeep Sarkar, the video became a benchmark for non Bollywood music videos.

After the success of ‘Dhoom’, Euphoria started work on their second studio album ‘Phir Dhoom’; and delivered hit singles such as ‘Phir Dhoom’, ‘Rock Sako’, and ‘Pyar Hi Tha’. But it was their first single ‘Maaeri’ which became their most successful song, and their trademark tune. Two back to back hit records had already cemented Euphoria as a force to be reckoned with. In 2001, the band released what would be India’s first single ‘Mantra’, and established their unique hind rock resonance which was an eclectic mixture of Indian and global sounds.

Mantra was later included in the band’s third album, ‘Gully’ in 2003, which was an instant craze amongst the Indian audiences. Three music videos were made for the songs ‘Ana Meri Gully’, ‘Raja Rani’ and ‘Ab Na Jaa’ and all of them received heavy airplay on mainstream TV channels. In 2006, the fourth studio album ‘Mehfuz’ surprised critics and fans alike. The new sound and the maturity in the songwriting won a lot of hearts and made Euphoria the only force in Indian music which could commercially take on Bollywood. Four music videos were released for the songs ‘Soneya’, ‘Mehfuz’, ‘Bewafaa’, and ‘Rab Jaane’. In 2008, the band completed 10 years of their recording career and released ‘ReDhoom’ a commemorative compilation album consisting of 12 of Euphoria’s biggest hits with a music video of the song ‘Bhoola Sab’.

Euphoria has played live concerts across the country and the globe, and is known to be the most prolific live act from India. The band is now readying for the release of their highly awaited fifth studio album, scheduled for a release in August 2011 and is also shooting for an upcoming documentary on 14 of their popular music videos, to be webcast on the internet. Besides that, they will also make a comeback in the Bollywood circuit with their song ‘Jiya Jaye Na’ for the film Mumbai Cutting, starring Dr. Palash Sen in the lead role.

After a successful tour of the USA in November 2010 and the release of ‘Dilli Meri Jaan’ and ‘Gateway to your heart’ the theme tracks of the Commonwealth Games 2010, the band is looking forward to.. what else, but more DHOOM…

Don 2 Music Review

Anusha Mani and Vishal Dadlani kick off the soundtrack with a spunky techno-based Zaraa Dil Ko Thaam Lo Shankar Ehsaan Loybuild around the classic Don hook. The contrasting combo of Anusha’s husky voice and the rawness of Vishal’s vocals works well. The bongo drum (or is it something else?) beats that underlie Dushman Meragive it a very RDB feel. Sunitha Sarathy handles the vocals here with Shankar Mahadevan. Sunitha does a neat job as usual, and the song seems to work fine till the latter half where a vocal version of the second interlude of Don 1 title song appears. Mistake. Sunitha also does a cameo in the primarily instrumental theme, The King Is Back, which (again) rehashes all the loops we had heard in the first movie with some more techno thrown in. And if you felt that you didn’t hear enough of Don 1 yet, the composers present you the title song itself in a renewed form, KK replacing Shaan on the vocals. With due respect to KK, Shaan sounded much better singing this. And yes, there is a remix as well, that features the “Don Ko Pakadna Mushkil Hi Nahi..” dialogue in a seemingly infinite loop! The pick of the album is Usha Uthup’s Hai Ye Maaya, which though once again replete with the Don signature elements, works for the imaginative jazzy touches. And for the imposing voice of the lady. The remix was too techno for my liking. The Don Waltz starts off decently, following a regular waltz template, until after about a minute and a half where the curse of Don strikes this song well! But that said, Caralisa Monteiro sounds awesome doing that humming. The only track where the Don loop doesn’t appear is Aa Raha Hoon, but that is probably only coz there is nothing very musical about it, SRK rendering a dialogue about his return.
