Neelam Saxena Chandra,this name needs no introduction after the release of "Mere Saajan Sun Sun " (Shankar Tucker Feat. shweta Subram)

 I wrote this tune after being inspired by seeing the incredible Raghu Dixit perform live. Many thanks to Neelam Chandra for her fantastic lyrics, and of course to Shweta Subram for her outstanding vocal performance.

     A brief introduction about NeelamJi

Neelam Chandra is an engineer by profession. Writing poetry and fiction is her passion. More than two hundred of her stories/poems have been published in various leading Indian (Womans Era, Alive, Sarita, Grihshobha, Grihlaxmi, Kathakram, Nandan,  Chandamama, Champak, Suman Saurabh etc) as well as international magazines such as Enchanting Verses, Frog croon, Saraba, Ewoman etc. Three of her children's story books have also been published. Her poems/stories have been published in various international anthologies such as ON THE BRINK (By Spectacle Publishing), HEALING WAVES (By Skywarrior Publications), PHO FOR LIFE etc . One of her story has won an award in a contest organized by Children Book Trust, India in 2009. She has also been awarded second prize by Gulzarji in a Poetry Contest organized by American Society on the topic 'Poetry for Social Change'.


Hi NeelamJi,let’s make this interview just like a chit-chat so that we can understand you better 

   

    How does this lyrical journey happen?

This is my debut performance in the field of writing lyrics. Although I must have written more than 400 poems/songs, I had sent them for publication in magazines only till now. Shankar Tucker liked my work and the rest is history. 

     Who is/are your inspiration for you to take this golden path?

My family and my friends are my biggest inspiration who have always been with me in this journey.

     What change do you see in the lyrics in the past say 70’s 80’s and Now?

Lyrics in 70’s and 80’s were more poetic in nature. Slangs were a big ‘no, no’. The lingo used these days is mostly as per modern trend prevalent in society.  However, the wonderful thing these days’ is that people accept ‘Chikni Chameli’ as much as they accept ‘Maa kabhi batlaata nahin’ of Taare zameen par. The canvas has become widespread.

     What lyrics mean to you and your heart?

Lyrics have to come out from my heart. I should be able to feel it. They reflect my thoughts at that instant for a given scene/emotion/music.

     Do you think Mixing/Remixing/rapping  is killing the essence of poetic words?

Naturally, it is. But there are variety of 

people liking different things. We have everything today. Rap for those who prefer that and poetic songs for those who prefer something different.

    Your favorite Lyricist(s), Favorite Song(s) with beautiful lyrics?

My favorite lyricist is Gulzar sahib. I happened to meet him once since he was the judge for the poetry contest in which I had won a prize and those moments I feel are the most cherished. Favorite songs mostly include ‘Mera kuch saamaan tumhare paas’ and ‘Tujhse naraaz nahin jindagi’. Besides this I also love old melodies like ‘Ek pyaar ka nagma hai’.

     How was it working with a contemporary musician Like Shankar tucker? Can you brief us about how this collaboration happened?

Working with Shankar Tucker was one of the best experience. He is an humble and modest person, very clear in his thoughts and action. He knows what exactly he is looking. I used to love his songs even before this collaboration happened and now, after having worked with him, I find him simply amazing.

What are your present and upcoming projects?

At present, I am concentrating upon writing a novella. I am just about to finish it after which I will take up other works.

     Do you believe that ‘Pen is mightier than Sword’ ?

Pen is having enormous power. It makes one see different angles and perspectives.

    What is Favorite spot for writing a poem/song?

I can write anywhere, but I love writing while travelling the most.

    How do you enjoy working with young generation musicians?

They have tremendous energy and it enthuses me too.

    What do you suggest the next Gen upcoming Lyricists?

Being a lyricist does not bring in so much name and fame. One should work for self-satisfaction which the work will give. Rejection is a part of the game and those with perseverance and fortitude will always succeed. Yes, one should always judge the shortcomings for oneself and keep working upon them continually.
